LTF: Sober Companion

In Just Under one week, Liverpool Theatre Festival will be returning to the bombed out church with a packed lineup of performances over 11 days. One of the standout highlights of the festival is the specially commissioned play, Sober Companion, co-written and co-starring Liverpool-born actor Joe McGann and Jake Norton.

Saturday, July 22nd, Sober Companion explores the intriguing themes of fame, addiction, and recovery. Written and performed by McGann and Norton, the play delves into the funny, raw, and sometimes dark aspects of these experiences. With its captivating narrative, Sober Companion appeals to audiences aged 14 and above.

Joe McGann, is known for his role in the long-running sitcom The Upper Hand and will also appear in the new Netflix series KAOS. Having returned to Liverpool after decades away, McGann brings a whole lot of talent and experience to the stage, including performances in acclaimed West End productions.

Jake Norton, who trained at Liverpool John Moores University and Hope Street Theatre, is an accomplished playwright and actor. With an impressive portfolio spanning television shows like Coronation Street, Emmerdale, and The Royal, as well as extensive theatre work, Norton is eagerly looking forward to returning to the Liverpool stage.

Sober Companion follows Dan, a high-flying prime time television presenter with a hidden addiction. Concerned individuals close to him seek the help of Gerard, played by Joe McGann, who draws upon his own recovery experiences to aid Dan. The play explores intervention, privacy intrusion, and the complexities of admitting one's need for assistance.

Joe McGann explains his excitement about being part of  Sober Companion at St Luke's, by praising it as an inspiring space that allows important conversations to take place beyond conventional venues. Both McGann and Norton are thrilled to be part of the Liverpool Theatre Festival, which is attracting new audiences to the performing arts in Liverpool and providing a platform for premiering new works.

I agree, Liverpool is booming with creativity especially after the lockdowns in 2020, the scene has been growing ever since with festivals like the LTF helping theatre grow and be accessible to all audiences.  Bill and the team has also organised a little LTF, giving a platform for upcoming writers to have a chance to get their work performed. Festivals like this is so important to get behind and support.

Sober Companion and other shows promises to provide an enriching and inclusive experience. Don't miss the opportunity to enjoy theatre at the Liverpool Theatre Festival, Kicking off 20th July.
